Sterile Processing Technician Job Requirements

• Successful completion of a surgical technology training program or at least 1 year of operating room scrub experience
• Current BLS certification
• Knowledge of medical asepsis, sterile processing, sterilization procedures, and operating room safety protocols
• Working knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment functions, surgical tray setup, and common operative procedures
• Ability to inspect, clean, assemble, sterilize, and distribute surgical instruments according to established protocols
• Ability to properly handle tissue specimens, cultures, and smears
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to perform repetitive or highly precise tasks
• Ability to tolerate exposure to blood and body tissue
• Central Supply Technician certification is a plus

Sterile Processing and Operating Room Responsibilities

• Decontaminate, clean, inspect, assemble, package, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment
• Operate and monitor steam autoclaves, sonic washers, and other sterile processing equipment
• Perform sterilizer testing and accurately record test results
• Check equipment for leaks, defects, loose parts, and other maintenance concerns; report issues promptly
• Organize surgical instrument trays and maintain appropriate inventory levels in sterile storage areas
• Stock and distribute instruments, supplies, and crash cart items to the operating room and other designated departments
• Prepare operating rooms and instrument sets based on scheduled procedures, potential complications, and surgeon preferences
• Scrub, gown, and glove team members; assist with sterile draping and maintain sterile technique throughout procedures
• Handle instruments safely and efficiently, anticipate procedural needs, and help prevent unnecessary delays
• Complete surgical counts of sponges and sharps in coordination with the circulating nurse
• Assist with specimen identification and preservation according to established procedures
• Support operating room cleanup, room turnover, supply replenishment, and preparation for subsequent procedures
• Participate in staff education, orientation, and training as assigned
• Protect patient privacy and confidentiality while following department policies and the established chain of command
